A Contemporary Addition to a Grade 2 Listed Thatched Cottage

A series of owners had abandoned the idea of living in the building. It was damp, cold, dark and the planning authority would not allow any alteration to the historic fabric. This left little scope for any significant improvement.

We suggested adding a contemporary timber framed extension to the historic timber framed cottage. The extension is long and thing, as is the garden. Horizontal metal triple-glazed windows within a cedar clad screen help to frame what would otherwise be limited views of the garden.

The new building creates a modern, light and energy efficient living space. It lightly connects to the thatched cottage via single storey glazed link. A solid fuel stove now makes the cottage kitchen and dining space cost. The contemporary design sits behind a plain brick gable and comfortably within the townscape of Melbourne.

This project received a Civic Society Award on its completion.
